Pulau Kukup is an uninhabited mangrove island about 1 km off the coast of Kukup in Pontian District, Johor, and it has been a Ramsar wetland site since 31 January 2003. It is roughly an hour by road from Johor Bahru, which makes it an easy half-day out if you are staying at KSL D’Esplanade.
If you are tired of malls and want something green, this is the one. No cars, no hotels, just boardwalks, mud, birds and the smell of salty mangrove. I would not call it a theme park (no lah), but for nature lovers it is confirm worth the drive.
What is Pulau Kukup and why is it special?
Pulau Kukup is a state park managed by Johor National Parks and one of the few intact mangrove sites of its type left in Southeast Asia, according to its Ramsar listing. Wildlife recorded there includes long-tailed macaques, bearded pigs and the globally vulnerable lesser adjutant stork. The mangroves also buffer Kukup town from storms, which is why the island matters beyond the pretty pictures.
What can you do on the island?
Self-guided visitors can walk the boardwalks and observation platforms, with signs explaining the mangrove ecosystem. Johor National Parks also lists boat trips, including a ride around the island, a visit to a floating fish farm (kelong), and a creek ride up Sungai Ular that is only possible at high tide. Half-day guided packages with a ranger need advance booking. Birdwatchers should note that migratory birds visit roughly from September to April.

How do you get to Pulau Kukup from KSL?
You reach the island by boat from Kukup town. Drive from JB is roughly an hour depending on traffic (a route planner estimates about 50 km), so most people go by car or Grab and book the boat through the park office. Visitor reviews have mentioned repairs and access changes in the past, so confirm opening days, boat availability and fees with Johor National Parks (+607-266 1301) before you leave. For more outings in the region, see our Johor Bahru day trips guide.
When is the best time to visit?
Go in the morning, when it is cooler and boats are easier to arrange. Check the tide first, because the creek ride needs high tide. Bring insect repellent, water, a hat and shoes you do not mind getting muddy. Rainy months can change boat schedules, so see the best time to visit Johor Bahru. Travelling with children? Our Johor Bahru with kids guide has more ideas, and keep little ones close on the boardwalks.
