Singapore’s year-end school holidays run from Saturday 21 November to Thursday 31 December 2026, and that six-week stretch is likely to be the busiest time to cross into Johor Bahru (JB) for the rest of the year.
Term 4 ends on Friday 20 November, Christmas lands on a Friday (25 December), and half of Singapore seems to remember at the same time that JB has cheap dinners and good massages. This guide is a crossing plan, not a scare story: when the pressure points are, what officials and traffic trackers advise, and how to still enjoy JB. Facts below are as of 30 September 2026, and the official 2026 checkpoint advisory has not been released yet.
When exactly are the 2026 year-end holidays, and which dates matter?
- Term 4 ends Friday 20 November; holidays run 21 November to 31 December 2026 for primary and secondary schools, per the Singapore Ministry of Education calendar. Post-secondary students finish a week later, so their holidays start on 28 November.
- Deepavali: Sunday 8 November, with a replacement holiday on Monday 9 November, listed on the Singapore Consulate-General in Johor Bahru’s public holiday page. That is a warm-up long weekend before the school break.
- Christmas Day: Friday 25 December, so a natural three-day weekend in the middle of the holidays.
- New Year’s Eve: Thursday 31 December, the last day of the break, followed by a Friday public holiday for many on 1 January.

How bad will the Causeway get, and when?
Nobody can promise a number, but the pattern is well documented. The third-party tracker Causewaytraffic.sg rates 21 November to 31 December 2026 as “Extreme” and calls it the highest remaining holiday cluster after June, while the Deepavali weekend (8–9 November) is only “Moderate”. That is one site’s opinion, not an official forecast.
For a real-world benchmark, look at last year. Singapore’s Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) reported over 550,000 travellers clearing the land checkpoints in a single day during the Deepavali weekend of 17–20 October 2025, with some car travellers waiting up to three hours. ICA’s 2025 year-end advisory covered 21 November 2025 to 1 January 2026. Expect ICA to publish a similar 2026 notice in mid-November, likely with similar dates, but that is our expectation, not an announcement.
- Worst windows (per Causewaytraffic.sg): Sunday evenings on the way back to Singapore, roughly 4pm to 10pm.
- Likely busy too (our expectation, not sourced): the first Saturday of the holidays (21 November), the run-up to Christmas Day, and the days around 31 December and 1 January.
How do I make the crossing easier?
- Leave before 6am. Causewaytraffic.sg calls a pre-dawn departure the single most reliable tactic for every holiday.
- Split your routes: the tracker suggests Tuas Second Link going out and Woodlands Causeway coming back for most holiday scenarios. Check live traffic before you commit.
- Use the MyICA QR code instead of showing a passport at the Singapore checkpoint, as ICA recommends, and keep your passport valid for at least six months.
- Consider cross-border buses (services 160, 170 and 170X are named by Causewaytraffic.sg) to avoid car queues, though buses share the same road and can be slow too.
- Do not carry vapes. ICA says e-vaporiser checks are intensified in peak periods, which slows lanes, and possession is prohibited in Singapore.
- The RTS Link will not save this holiday. It is targeted for January 2027, so read our RTS Link guide for the next trip instead.

Is JB in December still worth it, and what is the insider tip?
Honestly, yes, if you stop treating the crossing as a same-day dash. The pros: malls, hawker food and massages are all open with festive energy, and a longer stay means you cross once and stay put. The cons: everything is busier, Grab surge pricing is more likely at peak hours, and popular restaurants may have queues at dinner time.
The local tip: cross on a weekday if you can, stay at least two nights, and make your return on a Monday or Tuesday morning rather than Sunday night. You will spend far less of your holiday in a car.
