Since 12 December 2025, KTM’s Electric Train Service (ETS) has run directly between JB Sentral and KL Sentral — a comfortable, city-centre-to-city-centre ride of roughly four to five hours that, for many travellers, beats the drive.
For years the only train south of Gemas was the slow diesel intercity. That changed when the Gemas–Johor Bahru Electrified Double Tracking Project was completed in stages through 2025, closing the last electrified gap on Peninsular Malaysia’s West Coast Line. If you’re basing yourself at KSL D’Esplanade in JB city centre and want a KL trip without a car, here’s how the ETS works.
Does the ETS really run from JB Sentral now?
Yes. Multiple independent sources — including Wikipedia and a first-hand December 2025 review by The MileLion — confirm that ETS passenger services to JB Sentral 📍 Map began on 12 December 2025, extending the existing KL–Kluang line all the way south. Trains run directly to KL Sentral 📍 Map with no change of train. At launch the service was limited, and later 2026 guides report it has grown to several daily departures each way — but frequencies change, so always check the live schedule at ktmb.com.my before you plan.
How long does the JB to KL train take?
Plan for roughly four to five hours end to end. Reported timings cluster around 4 hours 10 minutes to 4 hours 40 minutes at the time of writing, and one reviewer’s trip arrived about 20 minutes late due to track works near KL — so treat any single figure as approximate and check your specific train. That is broadly comparable to the drive up the North–South Highway (around five hours without stops), but on the train you can sleep, work or eat instead of gripping the wheel.
How do I book an ETS ticket?
Book online through KTMB’s official KITS booking site at online.ktmb.com.my or the KITS Style mobile app; tickets are also sold at station counters and self-service kiosks at major stations including JB Sentral and KL Sentral. A few tips:
- Book early — popular departures and weekends sell out well ahead.
- Fares vary by class and date; at the time of writing KTMB was running seasonal weekday discounts — check the current price on the official site rather than trusting any fixed figure.
- Bring a light jacket — reviewers consistently note the air-conditioning runs cold.
Why take the train instead of driving?
No fatigue, no highway tolls or fuel to juggle, no hunting for parking in KL, and no risk of Causeway-adjacent jams eating your morning. You arrive city-centre at KL Sentral, which links straight into the KL rail network. The trade-off is less door-to-door flexibility — but for a solo trip, a couple, or anyone who’d rather relax than drive, the ETS is a genuinely pleasant option. If you’re arriving from across the border first, our Singapore-to-JB weekend guide and our guide to getting around JB without a car pair well with this trip.
