Johor election day is a state public holiday, but your visit to JB changes very little: KSL City Mall, restaurants and Grab all run normally — and the Causeway is often quieter than a typical Saturday, making it one of the better days to cross.

If you are staying at KSL D’Esplanade or planning to visit JB today, here is what to expect on the ground.

Does election day affect visitors and tourists in JB?

Not directly. Polling is for Malaysian citizens registered in Johor — as a visitor or foreign guest, you have no voting obligations and can spend the day as you normally would. The day is a state public holiday, which means government offices and most bank branches close, but shopping malls, restaurants, petrol stations, pharmacies and convenience stores typically remain open. ATMs work normally; bank counters do not.

Will KSL City Mall and restaurants be open today?

KSL City Mall and the food streets of Taman Abad and Jalan Serampang are expected to open on their usual hours. Most commercial operators treat polling day as a normal trading day. Some smaller family-run stalls or kopitiam owners may close in the morning to vote — if a specific spot is a must-visit, a quick call ahead is worth it. See our JB food guide for the best places to eat near the mall.

Is the Causeway busier or quieter on election day?

Usually quieter. Many Johor residents who work in Singapore return home the day before to vote, so the typical Saturday morning cross-border rush is often lighter than normal. If you are crossing from Singapore today, conditions tend to be smoother than a regular weekend. The return journey on Sunday follows the usual Sunday pattern. What else should I know?

Polling stations (typically schools and community halls) close around 5pm. Expect brief local traffic near those sites in the hour before closing. Election results are counted and announced from the evening onwards — the atmosphere across JB is generally festive and peaceful. Grab runs normally all day and is the easiest way to get around.
